This remarkable structure, designed by Santiago Calatrava, has not only provided much-needed space for exhibits and programs but has also served as a spectacular visual ambassador for Milwaukee. The building's crowning Burke Brise Soleil, a mechanically operated sunshade that opens and closes its "wings," has become an iconic symbol of the city, with its image used for Visit Milwaukee's logo from 2005 to 2024. The Quadracci Pavilion, the actual name of the building, has attracted major artists and other museums, with its Baker/Rowland galleries considered the best in the world. However, the museum continues to face challenges in getting people inside to engage with art and programming, and the building itself requires ongoing maintenance and care to preserve its pristine condition. As the museum looks to the future, its new director, Kim Sajet, envisions creating more experiences that blend the inside of the museum with interactive programs outside, expanding the first-floor café, and adding outdoor features like fountains, playgrounds, and basketball courts to enhance the overall visitor experience.
