The Om Dome: A Hiker's Paradise
I awoke to the sound of alarms blaring at 4 am, signaling the start of a busy day. The plan was to catch a shuttle down to the S. Arm road, and with my 8:30 shuttle in mind, I wanted to be extra cautious. The four-mile trek through Sawyer Notch was a challenging start, but the view at the end was worth the effort. I made it to the "The Om Dome" hostel, a short hike into the heart of the wilderness.
The hostel itself is a marvel, ranking among my top five on the trail. It's a new, clean space with all the amenities one could need. From cozy couches and chairs to hammocks for a good rest, it's a hiker's paradise. The visit began with a loaner clothes service, a laundry facility, and an outdoor shower, making it feel like a home away from home. I even cooked up some quinoa, making the most of the available hiker supplies.
With my immediate needs met, I ventured into town to resupply and handle any tasks that required fast internet. The town itself was a bustling hub, and I was grateful for the generous food portions. Yukon, our host and shuttle driver, ensured everyone was well-fed, serving up a delicious dinner that impressed me with its variety and taste. The menu included:
- Breakfast: Oatmeal with pumpkin, dates, and walnuts
- Dinner: Fettucini, salad, rolls, and watermelon
- Snacks: Ice cream, cookies, and pancakes
- Bonus: Quinoa with sweet potato and onion, and an egg and cheese bagel
It's clear that Yukon understands the needs of hikers, providing a balanced and satisfying meal plan. And with no ramen bombs in 117 days, I'm grateful for the variety and quality of the food.
The Om Dome is a testament to the idea that hiking is both the journey and the goal. It's a place where the outdoors becomes a sanctuary, offering comfort and a sense of adventure. As I sat back and reflected on my day, I realized that the true beauty of hiking lies not just in the epic scenery but in the experiences and connections made along the way.
